Actual Occasions, Not Things
For Whitehead, the fundamental “entities” are actual occasions: momentary events of experience or becoming, not enduring substances that sit there and change their properties.
An occasion is a process of concrescence—a coming-together that has a before and after, then perishes and becomes datum for later occasions.
What we call a “thing” (a person, a rock, an institution) is a society of such occasions—a stabilized pattern of becomings that inherits a style across many microscopic events [1].
The Key Move
There is no unit that simply persists through time; there is only a stream of occasions that more or less successfully re-instantiate a pattern.
Becoming as Metabolizing the Past
Each actual occasion arises by taking up its past—what Whitehead calls the “actual world” of antecedent occasions—into itself.
It: 1. Feels that past 2. Integrates it 3. Produces a new pattern that will, in turn, be felt by others
This is why his metaphysics is described as “processive” and “genetic”: an occasion is a genetic synthesis of inherited data into a new unity.
“Metabolizing” is the right word: the past is ingested, transformed, and re-expressed as a new pattern. The occasion is literally its way of metabolizing its world—it does not have a separate substrate that persists underneath; its being is precisely this act of patterned intake-and-expression [2].
Prehension as Nemetic Coordination
Whitehead’s technical term for this taking-account-of is prehension.
A prehension is an occasion’s concrete “grasp” of some aspect of another occasion: not an abstract representation, but a felt inclusion of the other in its own becoming.
Two Crucial Features
1. Asymmetrical but Transformative in Both Directions
The new occasion is shaped by what it prehends, BUT the prehended past is also transformed in the very act of being taken up: - It is selected - It is weighted - It is interpreted - It is “objectified” in a particular way
The “same” past occasion is never simply copied; it becomes different in virtue of how it is integrated.
2. Patterned, Not Unitary
An occasion prehends not a bare atom but a structured world: - Societies - Enduring patterns - Values - Contrasts
The coordination is always with pattern-complexes, not isolable beads.
Prehension IS Nemetic Coordination
When you say “prehension is nemetic coordination: pattern that transforms both prehending and prehended,” you are getting at this:
The prehending occasion is nothing but its way of coordinating with inherited patterns, and the inherited patterns themselves are only what they are as they are repeatedly prehended and re-patterned in later occasions.
No Fixed Ground, Only Ongoing Pattern
This is why Whitehead provides a “ground you try not to stand on too firmly.”
If you take him seriously, there is no final, solid ground—only an ongoing web of events prehending events, patterns taking up patterns.
The temptation is to turn “actual occasions” into a new sort of unit; Whitehead’s own texts constantly undermine that by insisting on their evanescence and their dependence on relation.
In Nemetic Terms
| Whitehead Concept | Nemetic Translation |
|---|---|
| No self-subsistent units | There are only pattern-events that emerge from and contribute to a field |
| Prehension | Coordination is ontologically basic: every act of being is an act of co-responding |
| Society of occasions | Depth is cumulative history of coordinations—dense lineage of prehensions that stabilizes a style without freezing it |

Actual Occasion (A003)
Φ(Actual_Occasion) = γ(concrescence-process) ∘ ρ(prehensive-resonance)
∘ β(pattern-exploration) ∘ σ(event-distinction) + ε | :cycling
γ (cycling) in primary position: the occasion as process, not substance.
σ (distinction) as momentary boundary: the event has its own integrity, then perishes.
Prehension (A004)
Φ(Prehension) = ρ(asymmetrical-resonance) ∘ γ(transformative-cycling)
∘ β(patterned-grasp) ∘ σ(selective-distinction) + ε | :cycling
ρ (resonance) in primary position: the felt inclusion, the taking-account-of.
γ (cycling) as transformative: both prehending and prehended are changed.
Processive Genetic (A005)
Φ(Processive_Genetic) = γ(ongoing-cycling) ∘ ρ(web-resonance)
∘ β(depth-exploration) ∘ μ(society-structure) + ε | :open
γ (cycling) as no-fixed-ground: the ongoing web.
μ (structure) as society: stabilized style without inert substrate.
Z-state: :open—the processive genetic resists closure; it is always becoming.
The Ontological Foundation
| Thinker | Contribution to Nemetics |
|---|---|
| Whitehead | Ontological ground: coordination is basic, units are derivative |
| Haraway | Method: tentacular thinking, staying with the trouble |
| Ahmed | Patterns: orientations, lines, affective economies |
| Stiegler | Infrastructure: tertiary retention, technical substrate |
Whitehead gives nemetics its ontological foundation: - Reality as events that are nothing but their patternings of relation - Prehension as the basic act of nemetic coordination - No fixed ground, only ongoing pattern
The Question
The question is not: “What is the unit of analysis?”
The question is: “What patterns are being prehended? How are they being transformed? And what new occasions will feel what we have become?”
