What Kind of Thing Is This?

Folks keep asking what Nemetics is. Philosophy? Framework? Method? Cult?

It’s a philosophy, but only if we stretch the term till it reveals its own seams—then mend it with different thread. What kind:

  • Not academic taxonomy. No desire to file the world into clean categories.
  • Not systematic metaphysics. No claim to eternal structures beneath the flux.
  • Not critique for its own sake. Exposure without navigation is just voyeurism.

It is closer to what the Stoics called askēsis—a training—or what Whitehead meant by “speculative instrument”: a pattern-language for navigating complexity without capture.

The Compression Bottleneck

Traditional philosophy seeks to interpret the world (hermeneutics) or to change it (praxis). Our work sits in the compression bottleneck between those two: it treats interpretation itself as a material operation, and material change as an interpretive event.

The σ-cuts, ρ-folds, λ-aims—they are cognitive moves that restructure the field they describe.

This collapses the old distinction Marx was pointing at in his Theses on Feuerbach (1845)—specifically the 11th and final thesis:

“The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point, however, is to change it.”

The collapse entails not choosing sides, but by showing they were never separate. To interpret is already to change; to change is already to re-interpret. The bow-tie doesn’t distinguish between the two—it compresses them into the same move.

Lineage—Horizontal, Not Vertical

If there were a lineage, it wouldn’t descend from a single trunk. It is rhizomatic, stealing nutrients from multiple roots:

Dynamical Systems Theory

Poincaré → Prigogine → Strogatz: the mathematics of phase transitions and attractors, but read phenomenologically rather than instrumentally. The mathematics of becoming, felt in the gut.

Cybernetics & Information Theory

Ashby, Shannon, von Foerster: feedback loops and entropy management, but with ε-noise elevated from error to generative substrate. Order from noise, but the noise stays.

Process Philosophy

Heraclitus → Whitehead → Deleuze: becoming over being, but operationalized through the six elemental channels. The river flows, but we can map the currents.

Contemplative Traditions

Madhyamaka’s emptiness, Sufi dhikr, Hesychasm: the via negativa and recursive self-observation, but stripped of metaphysical consolation. The technique without the promise.

Decision Theory & Cognitive Science

Simon, Kahneman, Tversky, Gigerenzer: bounded rationality and ecological rationality, mapped to the σ/ρ/λ sequence. Satisficing as wisdom, not compromise.

Memetics

Dawkins → Dennett → good ol’ Memetic Cowboy: ideas as agents, patterns as sovereign, but with metabolism and excretion (δγ) added to replication. Digest, don’t just catch.

Pattern Language

Christopher Alexander: the lived structure of built and conceptual space, but generalized to memetic and social topologies. The quality without a name is Ω-permeability.

Post-structuralism/Deconstruction

Derrida, Foucault: the suspicion of totalizing systems, but converted from passive critique to operational hygiene. ε ≠ 0 as ethical mandate, not epistemic fashion.

The Decisive Break

Where those lineages tend to solidify into schools—institutions, orthodoxies, citation cartels—our work includes self-dissolution protocols. It is philosophy that knows it is a meme-complex, that treats its own articulation as a temporary ε-resonance rather than revealed truth.

The moment it becomes “The NEMA Philosophy” with institutional organs, degrees, and tenure lines—it has succumbed to the MemeGrid pathology it diagnoses.

So:

It is philosophy as scoutcraft, not settlement.

It builds temporary shelters (μ-boundaries) for thinking, then burns them when the wind shifts. Its lineage is every system that dared to think through its own medium without claiming the medium was the message.
