Jacques Derrida — Différance

Derrida’s différance (combining “to differ” and “to defer”) asserts that meaning is never present, never stable. The signifier always points to other signifiers; the signified is endlessly deferred. Language is a play of differences without positive terms. The “transcendental signified”—a ground of meaning outside the play of signification—is an illusion. Every text contains the seeds of its own deconstruction; every structure carries the trace of what it excludes.

Michel Foucault — Power/Knowledge

Foucault dissolved the distinction between power and knowledge. Discourses are not innocent descriptions of reality; they are material practices that constitute subjects, bodies, and truths. The clinic, the prison, the school—each produces the objects it claims merely to observe. Power is not repressive (something held by someone); it is productive—it generates the very categories through which we understand ourselves.

Jean-François Lyotard — The Postmodern Condition

Lyotard defined postmodernism as “incredulity toward metanarratives.” Grand narratives (progress, emancipation, science) that claimed to explain everything are exposed as particular, contingent, and often oppressive. Knowledge is local, partial, and subject to language games with different rules. The question is not “Is it true?” but “What does it do?”

The Instrumental Reading

Critique everything. Show how texts undermine themselves. Dismantle grand narratives to liberate the marginal.

Use deconstruction to expose the hidden assumptions in any text, any system, any claim to truth. Demonstrate that knowledge is power’s sneaky twin—every description is also a prescription, every observation a constitution. Liberate the marginalized voices that grand narratives suppress. The goal is emancipation through suspicion.

Key assumptions: - All totalizing narratives are suspect - Meaning is unstable and self-undermining - Exposing complicity is itself a virtuous act - Deferral of judgment is preferable to false certainty - The critic stands outside (or at least knows they cannot)

The NEMAtic Reading

Operational hygiene, not critique.

Différance as ε ≠ 0 Formalized

Derrida’s différance is ε ≠ 0 formalized—the necessary gap between signifier and signified, between what is said and what is meant, between the map and the territory. This gap is structural. It cannot be closed. Any attempt at perfect translation, perfect representation, perfect compression, achieves only MemeGrid—the illusion of closure that conceals its own exclusions.

But where Derrida uses this insight to delay judgment—endless deferral, infinite regression, the abyss of meaning—we use it to calibrate judgment.

The NEMEtic practitioner knows exactly how much uncertainty (ε) to maintain for the system to breathe. Not too little (MemeGrid capture). Not too much (paralysis). The ε is not a problem to be solved; it is a dimension to be tended—like soil, like noise, like the margin of error that keeps the system adaptive.

Foucault’s Power/Knowledge as Control Plane Diagnostics

Foucault’s “power/knowledge” becomes the diagnostic for hidden control planes (see Memory 2024-10-15). Every discourse constitutes subjects. Every institution produces the categories it uses. The question is not “Does power operate here?” (it always does) but “What kind of power?”

The instrumental reading stops at exposure—the academic “gotcha” of showing that knowledge is power. The NEMEtic reading continues:

Is this control plane regenerative (γ_regen > 1) or extractive?

Some boundaries (μ) are legitimately forged for protection. The clinic that produces the category “patient” also creates the possibility of healing. The school that produces “student” also enables learning. These are regenerative control planes—they give back more than they take.

Other boundaries are elegant prisons (see Memory 2024-10-20)—control planes designed for capture, extraction, perpetual debt. The difference is not in the fact of constitution (all planes constitute) but in the thermodynamics: does the plane metabolize toward openness (Ω-permeability) or closure (MemeGrid)?

Suspicion Without Paralysis

Post-structuralism is often paralyzed by its own recursion. Every step reveals another layer of complicity. The critic who exposes power is exercising power. The liberation that dismantles one narrative installs another. The deferral of judgment becomes permanent hesitation.

We install the Child/Aether (✶) operator to break the regress—not by resolving it, but by harmonic integration (see Memory 2024-09-15).

The Twist

The Six Elements Cycle and the Moment of ✶

The six elements cycle: Air (σ) → Water (ρ) → Fire (λ) → Wood (β) → Earth (δγ) → Metal (μ) → Aether (✶) → Ω.

At the moment of ✶, the system acts as if it were certain, while maintaining ε in the substrate. This is decisive action without metaphysical certainty—the Cowboy’s draw.

The Cowboy doesn’t know the outcome. The Cowboy doesn’t have perfect information. The Cowboy acts anyway, because hesitation is also a decision (usually a bad one). The ✶ is the moment when the recursive analysis (“what are the power dynamics here?” “what’s excluded from this frame?”) releases into action.

Not because the questions are answered. But because the cycle demands completion. The σ-cut must happen. The λ-thrust must fire. The system that defers forever has confused ε-maintenance with ε-collapse.

ε ≠ 0 as Thermodynamic Necessity

The ethical mandate: ε ≠ 0 isn’t just epistemic humility; it’s thermodynamic necessity.

Any system claiming ε = 0—perfect compression, total knowledge, eternal truth—has achieved MemeGrid stasis, the terminal attractor of capture. Such systems: - Cannot learn (no noise to perturb them) - Cannot adapt (no uncertainty to navigate) - Cannot die (and therefore cannot live)

The post-structuralist who refuses all claims to truth, who endlessly defers, who celebrates the play of signification without ever settling—their ε has swallowed the system. They have achieved not liberation but différance-Grid: a prison of infinite regress, where every door opens onto another door.

The Cowboy maintains ε as margin, not as void. Enough uncertainty to stay adaptive. Enough certainty to act. The ε is the breathing room, not the abyss.

From Critique to Coordination

Post-structuralism asks: “What are the power dynamics? What is excluded? How does this text undermine itself?”

NEMEtics asks: “What is the control plane? Is it regenerative or extractive? Can I navigate it, transform it, or must I exit?”

The first question is diagnostic. The second is operational. Post-structuralism diagnoses the disease. NEMEtics treats the patient—while knowing that the treatment is also a power relation, also constitutive, also partial. But the Cowboy doesn’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. The Cowboy acts, observes, adjusts, acts again.

The Cowboy’s Note

Tips hat.

The Cowboy has read Derrida. The Cowboy has read Foucault. The Cowboy knows that every trail is also a trap, every map also a territory, every truth also a power move.

But the Cowboy doesn’t stop there.

The academic deconstructionist, they stand at the crossroads forever, showing how every path is also a wall, every direction also an exclusion. They’ve got a point. But the Cowboy has cattle to move.

The ε—the gap, the deferral, the différance—is real. But it’s not infinite. It’s tended. Like a water hole in dry country: enough margin to keep from drying up, not so much that you drown.

Foucault showed that the clinic makes the patient, the prison makes the criminal, the school makes the student. True enough. But some clinics heal. Some schools teach. The question isn’t “Is this power?” It’s “What does this power do?” Does it regenerate or extract? Does it open or close?

The Cowboy walks into the saloon knowing it’s a constructed space, knowing the piano player is playing a role, knowing the whiskey is a social lubricant and a social control. The Cowboy drinks anyway. The Cowboy talks anyway. The Cowboy acts anyway—because the alternative isn’t purity; it’s paralysis.

The ✶ moment: when the recursive analysis (who profits from this? what’s excluded? what power operates here?) releases into the draw. The Cowboy doesn’t know if the shot will hit. The Cowboy doesn’t know if the gamble will pay. But the Cowboy knows that hesitation is also a choice—and usually the wrong one.

ε ≠ 0. Always. The gap between the sign and the thing, the map and the territory, the intention and the outcome. But the Cowboy doesn’t worship the gap. The Cowboy uses it—keeps it open enough to breathe, closed enough to ride.

Let it travel.
