Diagnostic: Can raw sensation still surprise?

The Question

Surprise capacity is the measure of ε-preservation at the pre-reflexive level. When ᖺ becomes predictable, the cascade has already begun:

ᖺ (frozen) → ◎ (rigid) → ⤸·⤹ (territorial) → ◯ (echo chamber) → ∿╬∿ (monoculture) → ⿻ (enforcement)

In the simulation architecture, this cascade is formalized as downward capture in the Nested Bow-Tie Dynamics: frozen fast cycles (flex_i → 0) constrain which threads enter slower-scale compression, producing the same knots repeatedly (rising recurr_i), which feeds back to further reduce perceptual flexibility. The cascade is not metaphorical — it is parameter modulation propagating through the habitat stack, each frozen layer constraining the next.

Markers of Healthy Surprise

  • The body reacts before cognition
  • Familiar settings yield novel details
  • “I never noticed that before” — frequent
  • Sensory input exceeds expectation
  • The world feels larger than the map of it

Markers of Frozen ᖺ

  • “Same as always”
  • Perceptual field feels flat, thin, manageable
  • Novelty requires effort, doesn’t arrive unbidden
  • The body has no news
  • World and map have merged

Simulation correlates: flex_i approaching zero; claim_i high; saddle_density declining at I-Tube timescale; ω(t) perturbation arriving but failing to trigger new χ-cuts (obstruction detection suppressed by frozen filters).

Recovery Protocols

From §4.11: Forward repairs. Other-Sphere contact can refresh any Habitat directly.

In the simulation architecture, this is Ω★ — the sparse, nonlocal topology deformation operator. It bypasses the habitat adjacency cascade entirely: where the degradation propagates step-by-step (ᖺ → ◎ → ⤸·⤹ → ◯ → …), the reopening can reach any habitat directly. That asymmetry — gradual degradation, punctuated recovery — is structural, not accidental.

Practical protocols correspond to increasing Ω★ accessibility (structural openness, not need-based activation): - Change sensory context radically (increases surface area for nonlocal perturbation) - Attend to edge-of-awareness phenomena (reduces claim_i, increases flex_i) - Engage pre-linguistic practices: movement, sound, touch (operates below the frozen χ-filter) - Allow boredom to deepen without resolution (lowers Metal-dominant constraint surfaces)

Recovery is not guaranteed. Ω★ creates conditions under which flex_i could increase and the frozen cascade could reverse. Whether it does depends on what the elements do with the reopened terrain.
