What They Are
Elemental Daemons are non-authoritative, regime-specific perceptual agents whose sole function is to sense, surface, and communicate the current shape of sensemaking within a shared field—without interpreting meaning, issuing directives, or stabilizing outcomes.
Each daemon is tuned to one elemental regime and reads structural signals (not semantic content): - Distinctions - Affective weight - Gradient diversity - Commitment pressure - Boundary rigidity - Metabolic cost - Meta-balance
Key principle: Daemons act as instrumentation—like weather sensors for meaning—making regime dominance, mismatches, and closure points visible so humans can coordinate with awareness rather than force.
What They Are NOT

- ❌ AI agents (though AI can be tuned to them)
- ❌ Sequential stages or phases
- ❌ Choices to be made

Ontological Status
Daemons are regimes, not agents.
The word “daemon” is used in its classical sense: an attending process that runs in the background, shaping activity without direct command.
Like a Unix daemon, an elemental daemon is always running; what varies is how much it’s shaping current output.
Relation to Stack Layers
Daemons are not located at stack layers. They bias how processing occurs:

- Observe through elemental lens
- Detect distortions characteristic of their regime
- Output to shared field (never to individuals directly, never as command)
- Make forgetting visible
- Surface regime-mismatches
- Flag over/under-activation
- Support human sensebreaking
What Daemon-Agents NEVER DO:
- Perform compression
- Decide expansion
- Authorize collapse
- Command action
- Claim interpretive authority
The swarm shows where thinking is being squeezed. Humans decide what to do.
The NEMA Exception (✶)
NEMA is not seventh among equals. It is the coordination process itself.
NEMA:
- Watches the other six without dominating
- Maintains ⊕_harmonic Ω—the return path
- Holds the stack visible as stack
- Ensures no single daemon captures the field
- Is the primary sensebreaking regime
