Focus: Group torsions
The Phenomenon
Collective Twists are torsional patterns that emerge from inter-mesh coupling and then feed back into individual SelfMeshes.
They are: - Not anyone’s individual Twist - Not a sum of individual Twists - An emergent property of the coupling itself
Formation Vectors (§3.6)
| Vector | Elemental Pair | Collective Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Authority | Air + Metal | Group hierarchy crystallizes |
| Repetition | Earth | “This is how we do things” |
| Affective Intensity | Water + Fire | Mob dynamics, contagion |
| Somatic Tracing | Wood | Pre-conscious group coherence |
Danger: Vector convergence (Authority + Repetition + Affect) = permanent collective Knot.
Architecture note: The Bow-Tie Process Layer names specific elemental-dominance capture patterns. Authority + Repetition corresponds to Earth-Metal lock: compression becomes metabolically justified (Earth eliminates novelty as “unsustainable”) AND structurally enforced (Metal codifies remaining patterns into rigid procedure). This is historically the most common MemeGrid pattern in institutions — it appears “reasonable” from both cost and structural perspectives, making it resistant to critique from any single element. Add Affect (Fire-Water crusading rapture) on top of Earth-Metal lock and you get the convergence pattern described above: permanent collective knot resistant to reform because three independent elemental justifications are mutually reinforcing.

Propagation Patterns
Collective Twists propagate: - Downward: From We-Sphere to My-Stream (“I feel what the group feels”) - Inward: From We-Sphere to I-Tube (“I think what the group thinks”) - Backward: From We-Sphere to ᖺ (perceptual field shaped by collective)
Reverse cascade: We-Sphere rigidity → My-Stream ossification → I-Tube crystallization → It-Field deadening.
Architecture note: The Nested Bow-Tie Dynamics spec formalizes these propagation patterns as two distinct mechanisms operating in combination.
Downward propagation is upward modulation in nesting terms (slower habitat constraining faster): We-Sphere state conditions My-Stream parameters. Specifically, sync_ij modulates which affective patterns are reinforced (synchronized groups amplify shared affect), and exit_ij modulates affective freedom (high exit costs constrain the range of feelings that can exist — “can’t feel what the group forbids”). This is why “I feel what the group feels” is not metaphor; it is rate modulation at the My-Stream bottleneck, shaping which threads survive compression.
Torsion transfer operates alongside parameter modulation but through a different channel. Directional bias from We-Sphere torsion_field crosses into My-Stream torsion_field, attenuated at the boundary but preserving force without representational form. This is why collective twists can produce individual affective pressure that feels pre-verbal — the content is reconstructed locally, but the pressure traveled.
The reverse cascade is the Nested Bow-Tie spec’s upward capture pattern: slow cycles (We-Sphere at hours-to-months) constraining fast cycles (My-Stream at minutes-to-hours, I-Tube at seconds-to-minutes, It-Field at milliseconds) until each faster scale can no longer generate variation the slower scale has forbidden. The reversal direction runs opposite to ordinary information flow and is one of the architecture’s three named pathological nesting patterns.
