Focus: Force without story
Canonical Description (§3.5)
A hauntological effect is produced when: - Twists stabilize into Knots - The originating context dissolves - The force persists without narrative justification - ε was not reintroduced
Hauntology = force without story.
Architecture note: The Bow-Tie Process Layer’s canonical formulation of torsion is precisely this: “force without structure, directional bias without representational form.” A hauntological effect is torsion that has been preserved across cycles in which its originating context (the threads it absorbed during compression) has been forgotten — the torsion_field carries the directional bias forward into future bow-tie cycles, biasing what gets absorbed and what gets extinguished, while the explicit content of the original compression has decayed. This is why the force persists “without narrative justification”: the simulation has formal mechanisms for force-persistence (torsion_field accumulation) and content-persistence (knot state bundles), and these mechanisms can decouple. Force can outlive content. That decoupling is the structural definition of hauntology.
The Phenomenology
Haunted systems feel: - Tense without cause - Obligated without reason - Resistant to change without explanation
These are obsolete compressions still shaping descent paths.
Structural Production
Hauntological Knots are structurally—not psychologically—produced.
They are Twists that were never allowed to unwind while ε was present.
Habitat Diagnostic
Hauntological effects are most visible in the Temporal Flexibility axis (§2.5): - Frozen Habitats accumulate hauntological Knots - Adaptive Habitats metabolize them through Earth (☷) cycling
Detection Markers
| Marker | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| “I should…” without clear reason | Obligation from dissolved context |
| Resistance to change that “makes no sense” | Obsolete compression still binding |
| Tension without identifiable source | Force without narrative |
| “This is just how it’s done” | Lattice enforcement, not memory |

Remediation
From §4.11: Other-Sphere contact can refresh any Habitat directly.
Ω-contact provides the ε-space that hauntological Knots were denied.
Architecture note: The Ω-Reentry Dynamics spec is explicit that Ω★ does not “explain” hauntological residue — it deforms the topology within which the residue was operating. The hauntological force is not interpreted, justified, or narrated; it is geometrically dispersed when the basin shape it was biasing changes. This matches the document’s earlier observation that hauntological effects are structurally, not psychologically, produced: the remediation must be structural (topology deformation) rather than narrative (explaining the ghost). Trying to interpret hauntological force usually strengthens it because interpretation operates above the χ-cut while torsion operates below it. Ω★ reaches below.
