Focus: Where structure loosens

The Phenomenon

A breathing Lattice is one that: - Remembers without enforcing - Supports without dictating - Maintains ε across structural memory - Allows Knots to loosen when conditions change

Breathing Markers

Indicator Meaning
“We used to do it this way, but…” Lattice memory, not enforcement
Revision without crisis Normalized re-threading
Multiple valid paths Structural diversity preserved
“How did we get here?” questions welcomed Historical revisability

Freezing Markers

Indicator Meaning
“That’s not how we do things” Enforcement
Revision requires justification ε-space collapsed
Single valid path Structural monoculture
Historical questions threatening Lattice defending itself

The Thermodynamics

From §5.6:

“Health is not the absence of Knots. Health is the capacity for Twists to unwind.”

A breathing Lattice preserves this capacity. A frozen Lattice destroys it.

Architecture note: “Capacity for Twists to unwind” maps onto two distinct simulation properties operating at different scales. At the cycle scale, it is bottleneck ε > 0 across successive bow-tie cycles, allowing newly-forming knots to be revisable. At the Lattice scale, it is bias_field that responds to ω(t) input — the structural memory still updates from new perturbation. A breathing Lattice has both: cycles produce revisable knots AND structural memory deforms in response to those cycles. A frozen Lattice can lose either independently. Cycles producing rigid knots without Lattice updating is procedural rigidity. Lattice updating without cycle revisability is performative reform — surface change without structural shift. Both fail. The breathing distinction requires both to remain alive.
